Jain Recipes

If you’re looking for flavorful, practical Jain Recipes, you’ll find plenty of ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and special occasions. This collection includes traditional Indian favorites as well as modern and global dishes made to suit a Jain diet.

I was born and raised in a Jain family, so Jain food has always been a part of my everyday life. And one thing I know for sure is that cooking without onion, garlic, potatoes, and other restricted ingredients doesn’t mean the food has to be bland. With the right spices, ingredients, and cooking techniques, Jain food can be just as flavorful, comforting, and satisfying.

You’ll find everything from Jain curries, dals, paneer dishes, rice recipes, breakfast ideas, and snacks to pasta, salads, soups, and other everyday meals. Some recipes may use fresh ginger; when needed, you can skip it or use dry ginger powder depending on your dietary practices.

A Note About Jain-Friendly Recipes: Jain dietary practices can vary between families and individuals. Some recipes in this collection may include ingredients such as fresh ginger or carrots that you may choose to avoid. Where possible, I include simple substitutions or suggest omitting these ingredients so you can adapt the recipe according to your dietary practices.

Tips For Flavorful Jain Cooking

Jain cooking may exclude onion, garlic, root vegetables, and certain other ingredients, but that doesn’t mean the food has to be simple or lacking in flavor. Growing up in a Jain family, I learned that the right combination of spices, herbs, and cooking techniques can create incredibly flavorful and satisfying meals.

Ingredients such as tomatoes, cumin seeds, hing (asafoetida), whole and ground spices, fresh herbs, yogurt, nuts, seeds, and dried ginger powder can help add depth and balance to Jain dishes. Techniques such as blooming spices in oil or ghee, roasting ingredients, cooking tomatoes well, and finishing a dish with a flavorful tadka can also make a big difference.

Jain dietary practices can vary by family and individual. Some recipes may use ingredients such as fresh ginger or certain vegetables that you prefer to avoid. Whenever possible, I include substitutions or simple ways to customize a recipe according to dietary practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Jain Food?

Jain food is prepared according to Jain dietary principles and typically excludes onion, garlic, and root vegetables. Dietary practices can vary between families and individuals, so some people may also avoid additional ingredients depending on their traditions and level of observance.

What Can I Make For a Jain Dinner?

There are plenty of satisfying Jain dinner options, including dals, paneer and vegetable curries, rice dishes, and even global favorites such as pasta. The key is choosing recipes made without onion, garlic, root vegetables, and any other ingredients you personally avoid.

How Can I Make Jain Food Flavorful Without Onion and Garlic?

Spices and cooking techniques can add plenty of flavor to Jain food. Depending on the recipe, ingredients such as seeds, tomatoes, celery, herbs, yogurt, nuts, whole and ground spices, and dried ginger powder can add depth. Adding a flavorful tadka can also make a big difference.

Are Jain Recipes and No Onion No Garlic Recipes the Same?

Not always. Jain recipes are made without onion and garlic, but Jain dietary practices may also exclude root vegetables and other ingredients. A no onion no garlic recipe may therefore not automatically be Jain-friendly. If you don’t follow a strict Jain diet but avoid onion and garlic, you can explore my No Onion No Garlic Recipes collection for even more ideas.
