About Apple, Turnip, and Sumac Salad
If you are tired of having green leafy salad, you should try this fruity and refreshing apple salad. Also, if you try to eat an apple every day but sometimes want to enjoy it differently, this salad is for you!
The combination of sweet and tart apples with crisp and mildly spicy turnips is fantastic. Turnip provides a crunch and great contrast to the fruity flavor. I have also added grapes for more flavor and sweetness and to make the salad colorful.
Sumac has become one of my favorite spices since ever I started using it. I have added sumac to this salad, providing a deep red color and adding tart and tangy flavors. I love how it tints the salad with a beautifully vibrant color.
But do not worry if you do not have sumac or turnip; you can still make this salad with some other variations. For example, you can add a spice of your preference or swap grapes with pomegranate or berries. Instead of a turnip, add thinly sliced beets, which enhance the nutritional value and add a beautiful color.
Apple, Turnip, and Sumac Salad recipe is simple, and there is no need to buy or make any salad dressing. Instead, simply drizzle some olive oil and squeeze some lemon juice; season well with spices, and that’s it!
And, yes, not to forget cilantro; it adds a deliciously fresh and earthy flavor to this salad.

Ingredients
- Apples: I have used Gala apples for this recipe; they are perfectly firm, crisp, sweet, juicy, and slightly tart. So, basically, you can use any variety of apples, but they should be firm, crisp, and not too soft. Some suggestions are Honeycrisp, Fuji, Braeburn, and Empire apples. But again, go with your favorite apples to make this salad.
- Turnip: Use fresh turnip for the crisp texture. It adds contrast, crunch, and more flavors to this salad.
- Grapes: I love how grapes pair well with apples in this salad. I have used red grapes, but black grapes will work as well. You can add more or fewer grapes as per your preference.
- Olive Oil: We do not need a lot of oil to make this salad; only a tiny drizzle of it will work. So I would say we need to add olive oil, about a teaspoon or two, for this recipe.
- Lemon Juice: It prevents apples from browning and brightens the flavors of the salad. Squeeze lemon juice as per your taste.
- Sumac: This middle eastern spice adds vibrant color, brings out the flavors of the salad, and adds its tanginess.
- Seasonings: I used sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to season the salad. Taste the salad before serving and adjust the seasonings if needed.
- Cilantro (Coriander Leaves): My absolute favorite to give an Indian touch to the dish. However, it is totally optional, and you can skip it. Or add other herbs of your choice; the best suggestion is finely chopped fresh mint leaves.
How To Make The Salad
- Wash, peel and cut the turnip into thin slices.
- Next, wash and cut the grapes into quarters or halves.
- Wash the apples thoroughly and pat them dry.
- Leaving the skin on, dice the apples into about ½-inch cubes, discarding the core and seeds.
- Place the apple cubes, thinly sliced turnips, and grapes in a mixing bowl.
- Drizzle some olive oil and lemon juice, and toss well.
- Add sumac, salt, pepper, and chopped cilantro.
- Mix well and serve the salad immediately.
Serving and Storing Suggestions
- Apple, Turnip, and Sumac Salad is filling and satisfying, so you can have it for your lunch. Or serve it as a side dish with your main course.
- This salad can be a great healthy snack for the hunger pang between meals.
- It can be your delicious fruit salad if you like to have fruit in the morning.
- This salad is best served immediately, but if you have leftovers, cover it tightly and refrigerate it for a day.
Variations
Turnip: Do you not have turnip, or are you not a fan of it? Replace it with thinly sliced beets or carrots. The other best option is celery, and it really goes well with apples. However, you can simply skip the turnip from the dish if you want.
Grapes: Add pomegranates for color, crunch, and punch of flavor instead of grapes. If you do not want to add other fruit, you can add some dried fruits like cranberries.
Cilantro: You can skip or replace it with finely chopped fresh mint leaves.
Nuts: Want to add more nutrients? Add toasted pecans, walnuts, or slivered almonds.
Sumac: Do not have sumac? Simply add more lemon juice! Or chaat masala (I know it offers different flavors), which can be another great option. Sprinkle some chaat masala right before serving the salad.
Helpful Tips
- Apples: Use firm, crisp, sweet, and juicy apples for this salad. I have kept the skin on, but if you want, you can peel the apples before chopping them. Make sure to chop the apples at last to prevent browning of apples. Or, after chopping apples, immediately squeeze some lime or lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Turnip: Use the fresh turnip for a crisp texture and mild flavors. Add it more or less as you prefer.
- Olive Oil: Do not add too much of it. Drizzle a teaspoon or two, and that is well enough.
