Apple, Turnip, and Sumac Salad

By: Jigna
This Apple Turnip and Sumac Salad delivers the perfect balance of sweet, tart, tangy, and crunchy in every bite. Fresh apples and grapes pair beautifully with crisp turnips, while sumac and lemon juice brighten the flavors. It is an easy no-cook salad that is both refreshing and satisfying.

Total Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 apples (I have used Gala apples)
  • 1 small turnip peeled and thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup red or black grapes cut in half
  • Olive oil for drizzling
  • A good squeeze of lemon juice to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground or coarsely ground sumac
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Finely chopped cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash, peel, and cut the turnip into thin slices. Next, wash and cut the grapes into quarters or halves.
  • Wash the apples thoroughly and pat them dry. Leaving the skin on, dice the apples into about ½-inch cubes, discarding the core and seeds.
  • Place the apple cubes, thinly sliced turnips, and grapes in a mixing bowl. Drizzle some olive oil and lemon juice, and toss well.
  • Add sumac, salt, pepper, and chopped cilantro. Mix well and serve the salad immediately.

Storing Suggestions

  • Apple Turnip and Sumac Salad is best enjoyed immediately after preparation.
  • If you have leftovers, transfer the salad to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1 day.
  • Keep in mind that the apples may soften slightly and release some moisture as they sit.

Notes

  1. Choose Crisp Apples: Firm apples provide the best texture. Softer apples can become mushy and do not hold up as well in the salad.
  2. Cut Apples Just Before Serving: To keep the apples looking fresh and vibrant, chop them shortly before serving. If preparing ahead, toss them immediately with lemon juice.
  3. Use Fresh Turnips: Young, fresh turnips have a milder flavor and a crisp texture. Older turnips may be stronger and slightly woody.
  4. Don’t Overdo the Olive Oil: This is meant to be a light and refreshing salad, not a heavily dressed one. A small drizzle is all you need.
  5. Adjust the Sumac to Taste: If you enjoy tangy flavors, add a little extra sumac before serving.
  6. Serve Immediately: This salad tastes best when freshly made while the apples and turnips are at their crispiest.
