Ingredients

  • 2 apples (I have used Gala apples)
  • 1 small turnip peeled and thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup red or black grapes cut into halves
  • Olive oil for drizzling
  • A good squeeze of lemon juice or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground or coarsely ground sumac
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Finely chopped cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash, peel and cut the turnip into thin slices. Next, wash and cut the grapes into quarters or halves.
  • Wash the apples thoroughly and pat them dry. Leaving the skin on, dice the apples into about ½-inch cubes, discarding the core and seeds.
  • Place the apple cubes, thinly sliced turnips, and grapes in a mixing bowl. Drizzle some olive oil and lemon juice, and toss well.
  • Add sumac, salt, pepper, and chopped cilantro. Mix well and serve the salad immediately.

Serving and Storing Suggestions

  • Apple, Turnip, and Sumac Salad is filling and satisfying, so you can have it for your lunch. Or serve it as a side dish with your main course.
  • This salad can be a great healthy snack for the hunger pang in between meals.
  • If you like to have fruits in the morning, this can be your delicious fruit salad.
  • This salad is the best served immediately, but if you have leftovers, cover it tightly and refrigerate it for a day.

Notes

  1. Apples: Use firm, crisp, sweet, and juicy apples for this salad. I have kept the skin on, but if you want, you can peel the apples before chopping them. Make sure to chop the apples at last to prevent browning of apples. Or, after chopping apples, immediately squeeze some lime or lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. Turnip: Use the fresh turnip for a crisp texture and mild flavors. Add it more or less as you prefer.
  3. Olive Oil: Do not add too much of it. Drizzle a teaspoon or two, and that is well enough.
