About Homemade Taco Seasoning
If you follow my blog, you know that our diet is vegetarian and without onion and garlic. So for us, it is a must to prepare some of the spices and seasonings at home as they are hard to find without onion and garlic.
And not only that but I also like to make certain spices at home, because I can make them as per my preferences. Also, making them home means we can have fresh seasoning, and they are preservative-free.
We can make Homemade Taco Seasoning in a big batch and store it in a cool and dry place. We can also keep it in the freezer for a more extended period of time.
I use this taco seasoning in vegetarian tacos, bean burritos, Mexican-style lasagna, bean salads, taco salads, and many other dishes.
Ingredients
- Red Chili Powder: I have used Indian red Kashmiri chili powder. It is not too spicy but is enough for some heat and bright red color. However, you can use your choice of red chili powder. And if your red chili powder is very hot, use less of it.
- Cumin Powder: It provides a pleasant earthy flavor, and it is my favorite spice in any dish made with beans. But feel free to reduce the quantity of cumin powder if you prefer less of it.
- Paprika: If you prefer a smoky flavor in your dish, use smoked paprika. I like to use half of the sweet paprika and half of the smoked paprika. You can use either one as per your preference or availability.
- Cayenne Pepper: For the mild taco seasoning, leave out the cayenne pepper. I have used a mildly spicy chili powder, and adding a bit of cayenne pepper brings perfect heat to my homemade taco seasoning.
- Salt and Black Pepper: I have used sea salt and finely ground black pepper powder for this recipe.
- Crushed Red Chili Flakes: Use as little or more as per your spice preference.
- Dried Oregano and Dried Basil: Pretty straightforward, and I will recommend not to skip them.
- Cornstarch: It helps in binding all the herbs and spices in this seasoning. But you can skip it if you don’t prefer to use it.
- Sugar: It is only a tsp, but it helps to enhance other flavors. But for the sugar-free taco seasoning, leave out the sugar.
How To Make Homemade Taco Seasoning
- Combine all the ingredients into a blending jar. Pulse it only for a few seconds until everything is well combined. Do not blend into a fine powder.
- I like to use a blender, so everything combines well.
- But instead of using a blender, you can simply add all the ingredients into a small jar, cover, and shake until everything is combined.
- Store the homemade taco seasoning in an air-tight container. It keeps well for up to six months and in the fridge for a year.
Helpful Tips
- 2 tablespoon of homemade taco seasoning is equivalent to one packet of store-bought taco seasoning.
- For the sugar-free and low-carb taco seasoning, leave out sugar and cornstarch.
- You can use this taco seasoning in bean burritos, burrito bowls, tacos, taco salads, bean salads, or many other Mexican fusion dishes.

How much seasoning do you recommend using per pound of meat?
Jigna says
Hi Rhonda, we are vegetarian and do not use meat. We make Mexican dishes with beans and I generally use 2tbsp of seasoning for the serving size of 4-5 people. So I am sorry but I will not be able to recommend you the amount of seasoning for meat dishes.

Best no-garlic no-onion taco seasoning yet! Used half the amount for red pepper flakes and still has a little bite to it. Used 2 T and 2/3 C water for 1 lb. ground beef. Makes a good amount, will refrigerate for the next taco night. Thank you for the great recipe!

hi,
what is the difference between red chilli powder and paprika powder? please explain.
Jigna says
Hi Disksh, red chili powder is made from dried red chilis, which is hot. However, Kashmiri red chili powder is mild and provides a bright red color.
On the other hand, Paprika is very mild and has a peppery taste. It also provides a bright red color. However, Paprika is also available in mild and hot varieties.

I was delighted to find this recipe! Since having Covid some of our family members cannot tolerate certain foods. Especially onion and garlic. It has been difficult to find family meals to suit everyone. This brings a lot of Mexican dishes back into play. Thank you for ther great recipe!
