What is Italian Seasoning?
Italian seasoning is a mix of dried herbs with earthy, peppery, and sweet flavors. Even though it is known as Italian seasoning, its origin is unknown. But this blend is trendy in North America and comes in very handy when you do not have fresh herbs available.
Homemade Italian Seasoning
I mostly make spice blends at home because of our diet restrictions on onion and garlic. And it happened many times that whenever I try to get store-bought Italian seasoning, it has garlic powder. So one fine day, I decided to try homemade Italian seasoning.
And right after making it at home, I realized how easy and quick it was. I can choose the herbs I prefer, and I know what exactly goes into my seasoning. Also, I can make it in the quantity I like, a small or large batch.
We like to have slight heat in most meals, so I have added red pepper flakes to this seasoning. But to keep the Italian seasoning traditional, you can skip red pepper flakes.
Why Homemade Seasoning

What We Need For Italian Seasoning
Traditionally, this seasoning includes five core herbs, dried oregano, dried basil, dried rosemary, dried thyme, and dried marjoram. But one can definitely customize it as per personal preferences. For example, I have added red pepper flakes, dried savory, and dried parsley.
So again, as I mentioned, making our own homemade seasoning is highly customizable, and we can decide which flavors to include. Also, it gives us the freedom to choose how much each ingredient to include.
Take my recipe as a base, choose the herbs you prefer, skip the ones you do not prefer, or change the ratio.
- Dried Basil: It has sweet and peppery flavors.
- Dried Oregano: It is strongly aromatic with earthy flavors.
- Dried Rosemary: This dried herb has peppery flavors.
- Dried Thyme: It has earthy, sharp, and peppery flavors.
- Dried Parsley: This dried herb has a very mild earthy flavor, so it blends well with other herbs.
- Dried Marjoram: It has warm and herbal flavors, and it is similar to oregano and thyme.
