Bread Pizza is the best way to satisfy the craving for pizza quickly and instantly. It is equally delicious, flavorful, and cheesy as the traditional pizza!
Not only would kids love Bread Pizza, but it can be anyone’s favorite who loves pizza. The recipe is easy and quick, and bread pizza can be served for lunch, a mid-day snack, a side dish, or packed for the lunch box!
About Bread Pizza
Bread pizza is one of the quick and delicious snack recipes. However, it can also be served as an appetizer, side dish, or lunch.
It is obviously not the same as pizza, but it still delivers the same vibes, taste, and flavors. And this recipe is highly customizable; you can choose vegetables, toppings, and herbs.
For this recipe, you can use your choice of bread slices, be it white, whole wheat, or multigrain sandwich bread. Or other options are French bread or rye bread. If you want to use homemade bread, you can check out these bread recipes, White Sandwich Bread and Homemade French Bread.
I have used light rye bread slices; I like this bread because it stays crispy longer. Also, it comes as large bread slices, which is convenient for placing more veggies and toppings on top.
Why You Will Love This Recipe
- It is an easy and quick recipe.
- Not only kids but everyone in the family would love Bread Pizza.
- The recipe is highly customizable with preferred toppings.
- It can be served as a snack, appetizer, or side dish.
- An excellent option for a school lunch box.
Ingredients
- Bread: I have used light rye bread (a mix of whole wheat and rye flour) to make the bread pizza. Rye keeps the bread crispy for longer, and pizza sauce can not make it soggy. But you can use other bread slices, such as whole wheat bread, french bread, white sandwich bread, or multigrain bread.
- Olive Oil: Instead of olive oil, you can use butter or other cooking oil to toast the bread.
- Pizza Sauce: I have used pizza sauce without onion and garlic. You can use your favorite homemade or store-bought pizza sauce. Do not spread too much pizza sauce on the bread; otherwise, the bread will become soggy.
- Vegetables: I have topped the bread with green peppers, tomatoes, and our favorite baby spinach. But feel free to use your favorite vegetables for this bread pizza.
- Cheese: You can use only mozzarella cheese or use a blend of different cheeses.
- Toppings: I have topped the bread pizza with olives and pickled jalapeno peppers. Again, top the pizza with your favorite toppings.
- Herbs and Spices: you can use either dried or fresh herbs. I have sprinkled dried oregano, dried basil, and red chili flakes. Other suggestions are Italian or pizza seasonings.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Heat a pan or skillet and spread a little oil or butter.
- Place the bread slices and lightly toast them on one side on low heat.
- Turn off the heat, remove the bread slices, and place them on the plate or board, keeping the toasted side up.
- Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce on the toasted side and place green pepper cubes, tomato cubes, and chopped spinach.
- Or you can use your favorite toppings.
- Then top it with grated mozzarella cheese and place olives and jalapeno peppers.
- Now sprinkle dried oregano, basil, and red chili flakes.
- Or you can use your favorite herbs.
- Next, heat the pan or skillet again and place the bread slices on it.
- Cover the pan with the lid and keep the heat on low.
- Cook the bread pizza until the cheese melts and the bread is well toasted on the bottom.
- However, keep checking in between to avoid burning the bread.
- Once it is toasted, remove it from the pan and serve.
Variations
Vegetables: You can add sauteed mushrooms, sauteed zucchini, sweet bell peppers, or boiled sweet corn kernels.
Toppings: Add pineapple chunks to add some fruity flavors. I have used Kalamata olive slices but use your favorite olives.
Fresh Herbs: Top the bread pizza with fresh basil if available.
Dried Herbs: Use Homemade Italian Seasoning or pizza seasoning.
Cheese: Instead of only mozzarella cheese, you can also use a blend of 2-3 cheeses.
Make It Indian-Style: Top the bread with stir-fried paneer cubes. You can also sprinkle some chopped coriander leaves for earthy flavors. Or sprinkle chaat masala on top before serving.
Helpful Tips
- Bread: I have used light rye bread for this recipe. Rye bread becomes crispy upon toasting and does not get soggy quickly. But you can use white or whole wheat sandwich bread or multigrain bread to make the bread pizza.
- Sauce: I have used pizza sauce without onion and garlic. You can use your favorite store-bought or homemade pizza sauce. Or instead of pizza sauce, you can use pesto, or for kids, you can use tomato ketchup as well.
- Toppings: I have topped the bread pizza with my family’s favorite toppings. However, you can add your choice of veggies and add fewer or more toppings than mentioned in the recipe.
- Herbs: If you have fresh basils, you can use them instead of dried ones. Also, you can use pizza seasoning or Italian seasoning instead of dried oregano and basil.
- Cooking: Keep the tawa on low heat while cooking bread pizza. High heat will toast the bread faster, but the cheese will not melt. Also, use a heavy tawa or skillet so the bread does not burn.
