About Virgin Pina Colada
Pina Colada is a Spanish name for strained pineapple, and it originates from Puerto Rico. It is a cocktail made with pineapple juice, coconut milk, or cream of coconut and rum.
Since we do not consume alcohol, this is my non-alcoholic version of Pina Colada. Our Virgin Pina Colada requires only two main ingredients. Also, instead of juice, I have used frozen pineapple, and hence there is no need for ice. Frozen pineapple makes the smoothie frothy, slushy, and creamier.
Ingredients
- Pineapple Chunks: I have used frozen pineapple to make this cocktail. But you can also use fresh pineapple and freeze it for 10-15 minutes before using it in the recipe. Cut the fresh pineapple in chunks and freeze it until you are ready to use it.
- Coconut Milk: I have used the canned light organic coconut milk. You can use your favorite brand of coconut milk or homemade coconut milk.
- Maple Syrup or Honey: If the pineapple is not sweet enough, then only add natural sweetener. If you are okay with slightly tart Pina Colada, you can also leave out sweetener.
- Sea Salt: I love to add sea salt because it provides a nice contrast to the tartness and sweetness of the Pina Colada. It enhances the flavor of this tropical cocktail. However, it is totally optional, and you can leave it out.

Pina Colada with Frozen Pineapple Chunks
- Keep the frozen pineapple chunks at room temperature for only 5-7 minutes to soften them a little.
Pina Colada with Fresh Pineapple

Making Pina Colada
- To the high-power blender, add pineapple chunks, coconut milk, and sea salt. Blend until well combined, creamy, and smooth.
- Taste and add maple syrup or honey if needed and as needed.
- Serve the chilled Pina Colada as it is or garnish it with chopped pineapples.
Garnishing Suggestions
- Serve the cocktail with chopped pineapples and cherry.
- You can also garnish it with mint leaves.
- Garnish Pina Colada with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Top the Pina Colada with whipped cream or for a vegan option with coconut whipped cream.
Variations
- To make the cocktail creamier and more like a milkshake, add a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream in the blender along with other ingredients.
- For a mint-flavored Pina Colada, add a few fresh mint leaves.
- For healthier options and protein boost, you can add chia seeds or hemp seeds.
Make-Ahead and Leftover
- You can make Virgin Pina Colada a few hours before you are planning to serve. Keep it refrigerated until the time of serving.
- If you have a leftover cocktail, refrigerate for up to two days. Upon refrigeration, coconut milk and pineapple juice may separate, so blend the cocktail quickly and then serve.
