What is Lassi?
Lassi is a popular and traditional yogurt-based drink, originated from North India. This delicious drink is a blend of yogurt, cold water or ice, and spices. There are two types of lassi, salty and sweet, and sweet lassi most often include fruits.
About Watermelon Smoothie or Lassi
One of my favorite fruits is watermelon in summer, and I also love to make juices and smoothies using watermelon. And this watermelon yogurt smoothie is my absolute favorite; it provides a super cooling effect and keeps full for longer.
I like the combo of watermelon and rose flavor. When I was in India, my mom often made Rose sharbat and added small watermelon chunks to it. It tastes amazing and is very refreshing. Also, we often make rose lassi which equally tastes refreshing and delicious. So I have made a combo of my two favorite drinks and make this watermelon yogurt smoothie flavored and sweetened with rose syrup.
If you do not have rose syrup, you can add sugar and rose extract instead. It will still provide that pleasant floral note to the smoothie. And instead of rose extract, you can also use rosewater.
Ingredients
- Watermelon: Choose fresh and sweet watermelon to make this smoothie. Sometimes, if watermelon stays for more than 2-3 days in the fridge after cutting, it tends to change the taste. So try using the freshly cut watermelon, also add only the red part, and stay away from the white part. If your watermelon has lots of seeds, remove the seeds as many as possible. If you want to make your smoothie thicker and slushy, freeze the watermelon chunks. Then use frozen watermelon chunks to make this lassi.
- Yogurt: I have used plain Homemade Yogurt to make this lassi. But you can use Greek or hung yogurt for the thicker smoothie if you want. For the vegan watermelon smoothie, use non-dairy yogurt.
- Rose Syrup: I always keep the rose syrup in my pantry and often use it to make rose sharbat, rose milk, rose lassi, and so on. It is easily available in most Indian grocery stores. If you do not have rose syrup, add sugar to taste and add rose essence if you have one. You can also add 2-3 teaspoon of rosewater instead of rose extract. You can choose not to add any sugar or add honey, agave, or maple syrup.
Substitute The Rose Syrup
- If you do not have rose syrup, you can add sugar and 2-3 teaspoon of rose water. Or, instead of rose water, add a few drops of rose essence or extract for the fresh rose flavor.
- Instead of rose syrup or sugar, you can also add agave, honey, or maple syrup.
- If you do not use rose syrup, please note that the color of the smoothie will be lighter.
